Suite Abyssinia is a compilation of the indigenous sounds I’ve heard in Ethiopia for the last seven years fused with American jazz. Being in the land of first recorded human life, there is a spiritual aspect to the music that comes from the soul, as most of my improvisation was and is usually a conversation with my Creator.

Jonovan Cooper Windsor, North Carolina

Dr. Jonovan Cooper lives in Addis Ababa with his wife and children and ministers at Beza International Church. He is an assistant professor at Yared School of Music, Addis Ababa University and teaches at Jazzamba School of Music. Jonovan actively studies Ethiopian music and has recorded his first project under his own name, “Suite Abyssinia," which features various rhythms and modes of Ethiopia. ... more
